2024-2025 CBA preseason games will kick off simultaneously in multiple regions on September 20th. According to the guidelines for athlete technical and physical tests released by the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), only athletes who meet the standards in the tests are eligible to participate in the preseason and the league. In addition to the centralized tests that ended on September 17th, there will be two more opportunities for supplementary tests before the preseason and after the 5th round of the regular season. The first supplementary test on September 19th saw players such as Ren Junfei and He Xining pass. For the other athletes who didn't pass, there is only one final chance left to participate in the new CBA season.

Compared to previous seasons in terms of the scope of tests, the number of exemptions, the test items, and the number of supplementary tests, the overall difficulty and strictness of the CBA tests this season are on par with 2013. However, there are fewer supplementary tests, making it the toughest CBA test ever. The specialized speed endurance test, also known as the "life-threatening 17 laps," remains the traditional and challenging test of the CBA tests this year.

The intensity of the "life-threatening 17 laps" has caused many CBA players to suffer greatly. Making it a hard benchmark for their playing is the main reason why the CBA tests have long been questioned. Is the CBA test too strict? There are divergent opinions, but many mature foreign clubs have similar shuttle run assessments. Take the NBA team Miami Heat as an example, the passing score in the CBA test "life-threatening 17 laps" is almost equivalent to the minimum requirement set by the Heat.

Full-scale tests rival 2013, fewer supplementary tests this year

The CBA test is not a new thing. As early as 1995, there were tests of running 3200 meters and shuttle runs in the league's inaugural year. What caused the recent heated discussions about this year's test is the full-scale test, with only three exceptions.

From 1995 to 2004, the CBA tests mainly consisted of running 3200 meters and shuttle runs. From 2005 to 2010, the CBA test was temporarily canceled. In 2011 and 2012, the tests were reinstated with 10 items, known as the "decathlon," but only the shuttle run was a hard benchmark, with one exemption per team.

In 2013, the intensity of the CBA tests increased, and full-scale tests truly became the norm, including 2-minute intense shooting, weighted squats, weighted bench press, and the specialized speed endurance test. However, compared to this season's CBA tests, there were more supplementary tests in 2013, with at least three chances for retests.

From 2014 to 2016, theoretically the tests were still full-scale, but the exemptions gradually increased, with national team players aged 36 and above exempted and a "three out of two" rule with easier difficulty. From 2017 to 2019, the difficulty of the CBA tests was significantly lowered, changing from full-scale to random tests with two players from each team, while retaining exemptions for veterans and national team players.

From 2020 to 2023, the CBA tests went back to full-scale from random tests, but the number of test items reduced from 4 to 2, including 2-minute intense shooting and the specialized speed endurance test. The exemptions were further expanded to include national team players and veterans aged 30 and above, with each team having one exemption.

In this season's CBA tests, only Zhang Ning, Zhao Jiaren, and Lu Wenbo, who participated in the three-on-three basketball event at the Paris Olympics, were exempted. The test items returned to four, with the scoring standards remaining the same as before (2013-2019), and there will be two chances for retests before the preseason and after the 5th round of the regular season.

Shuttle run is a hard benchmark, similar assessments in NBA teams

Gong Luming, the vice chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association, was the promoter of the reinstatement of the CBA tests in 2011 and has increased the overall difficulty this year. As early as 2012, Gong Luming stated that many mature foreign clubs have shuttle run assessments. "We asked Yao Ming, and he had to undergo this test every time he returned to the Rockets. This test is a basic skill that athletes must have, it is a hard benchmark." When interviewed on September 12th, Gong Luming emphasized once again that the standards of the CBA tests are not high, and it is not meant to set barriers for athletes. "As long as you want to play and keep training, you can pass."

Since 2011, whether it is full-scale tests or random tests, regardless of changes in the exemption range, the specialized speed endurance test ("life-threatening 17 laps") in the CBA tests has always been a hard benchmark.

According to the "Chinese Basketball Association Athlete Technical and Physical Test and Evaluation Manual," the "life-threatening 17 laps" consists of running back and forth between the two sidelines (15 meters) of a basketball court 17 times, with 4 sets, and a 2-minute rest between sets. The corresponding score is based on the average score of the four sets, with a maximum of 150 points and a passing score of 90 points.

The passing score varies depending on the athlete's height. Athletes who are 1.94 meters or below require 59 seconds for a perfect score and 62 seconds to pass. Athletes who are 1.95 to 2.04 meters tall require 61 seconds for a perfect score and 64 seconds to pass. Athletes who are 2.05 meters or taller require 63 seconds for a perfect score and 66 seconds to pass. In addition, for athletes who are over 2.09 meters tall, weigh more than 120 kilograms, or are over 30 years old, the passing scores are more relaxed. In November 2020, the CBA league announced the overall data of the tests for that year, with 297 participants, and 62 athletes achieved a perfect score in the "life-threatening 17 laps" test, accounting for 20.9%.

According to foreign media reports, the Miami Heat conducts a similar shuttle run assessment at the beginning of every preseason training camp. They treat all players equally, distinguishing only between interior players and other players. Players must meet the requirements to participate in training and games, with interior players needing to complete the run in 62 seconds and other players in 60 seconds. From the "Big Three" era of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh to recent years' star player Jimmy Butler and even the retired Udonis Haslem, no one can escape the Miami Heat preseason test.

The "life-threatening 17 laps" in the CBA covers a distance of 255 meters, with 17 runs between the sidelines of the court, while the Miami Heat's shuttle run in the NBA covers a distance of approximately 28.65 meters, with 10 runs between the baselines for a total of 286.5 meters and five sets, also with a 2-minute rest between sets. Although the "life-threatening 17 laps" requires more runs, the total distance and number of sets in the Miami Heat's shuttle run are greater.
