Tankard subsequently apologized to Son Heung-min through a post on his social media. He wrote, "Sonny! Brother! I apologize for everything that has happened, it was an unsavoury joke. You know I love you, I will never disrespect you, harm you or anyone else. I love you, brother!"

Son Heung-min responded on social media, saying, "I have spoken to Ben Tankard. He made a mistake, and he knows it. He has already apologized. He did not intentionally say anything offensive. We are brothers, and nothing has changed. We have put this incident behind us, we stand united, and we will fight for our club in the upcoming season."

Thereafter, Tankard clarified on social media, saying, "I want to tell all the fans and those who are following us that in my interview, I only mentioned Son Heung-min, and did not mention anyone else. I have already talked to him about this matter, and given the deep friendship between us, he understands that it was an unfortunate misunderstanding. I have clarified and resolved all issues with my friend.

"If anyone feels offended by the comments I made in the media, I sincerely apologize. But I also want you to know that I never mentioned anyone else. Therefore, I have no intention of directly or indirectly offending anyone. I give everyone a big hug and express my respect."

In September of this year, the English Football Association had issued a statement accusing Ben Tankard of racially discriminating against Son Heung-min, a serious violation of the rules.
